What the primary record establishes

FINRA Rule 2214 requires covered investment analysis tools to explain their criteria, method, limitations and key assumptions. Firms must explain that results can change between uses and over time. The rule also requires a disclosure about the hypothetical character of the results. FINRA Rule 2214 ↗

What the distinction changes

An investor can run the same contribution and horizon twice and see a lower chance of success after the tool updates its volatility input or eligible securities. Recording the model version, data date and settings helps reproduce the result.

What to check before drawing a conclusion

Where relevant the rule also calls for disclosure of the investments considered and how the tool selects or favors them. A report exported from the tool should carry the context needed to interpret its result as well.
