The proposal describes token-specific approval with a deadline and signature. Its documented status is Stagnant rather than Final.

What the primary record establishes

ERC-4494 was created on 25 November 2021. The official specification is marked Stagnant and describes signed approvals for non-fungible tokens. Ethereum — ERC-4494, Stagnant ↗

The interface uses spender, tokenId, deadline and signature. Unlike an approval for an amount of fungible tokens, it identifies a particular NFT and specifies a nonce for that token. Ethereum — ERC-4494, Stagnant ↗

What the distinction changes

The nonce increases on NFT transfers under the proposed rules. Implementers must reproduce these conditions rather than assume every NFT contract supports the same approval mechanism.

A permit signature authorizes a capability; it does not itself execute a sale. Payment, price and transfer still belong to their respective transactions and conditions.

What to check before drawing a conclusion

A wallet should expose contract, network, approved party, token and expiry. A friendly feature name is not a substitute for checking the actual fields being signed.

The proposal offers a particular interface, not a general security or adoption guarantee. Record its status and inspect the deployed implementation; the historical specification is not a new protocol launch this week.
