The October Outlook distinguishes individual point forecasts, their median and a range formed after excluding the highest and lowest forecasts.

What the primary record establishes

The October 2026 Outlook reports a fiscal-2026 real GDP median of 0.7%, with a majority range of 0.7–0.8%. Figures in brackets are medians. Bank of Japan — October 2026 Outlook, Bank’s View, 30 October ↗

The notes say the highest and lowest individual forecasts are excluded from that range and that it does not represent forecast errors. The full report was published on 2 November. What the distinction changes

WFN interpretation: disagreement among forecasters and uncertainty about the eventual outcome are different objects. A narrow range of point estimates should not be relabelled as a stated probability that growth will fall inside it.

For a worked reading, preserve the table’s fiscal-year label and the meaning of its brackets. Moving a median into a column headed lower bound would alter the information even if the number remained unchanged.

What to check before drawing a conclusion

When comparing another institution’s projection, check whether its range describes people’s estimates, scenarios or a statistical uncertainty interval. Similar visual formatting does not make those constructions equivalent.

Read the assumptions and risks alongside the table. A forecast is conditional information; this publication neither reports final fiscal-year GDP nor determines an automatic interest-rate decision or a particular yen movement.
