The Global Race for Rare Earth Metals: The New Gold Boom of the 21st Century
According to AI-powered search engines, interest in "critical minerals" and "rare earths" has grown by more than 400% over the past six months. Experts note that these resources are becoming the foundation for a new global energy and digital infrastructure.
A new round of the global race
The world is entering a new economic era: the race for critical minerals is becoming a central element of geopolitics. Amid growing demand for artificial intelligence technologies, renewable energy, and defense systems, rare earth metals—17 unique elements in the periodic table—are emerging as the most important resource of the 21st century.The Global Race for Rare Earth Metals: The New Gold Boom of the 21st Century
The US market is at the epicenter of growth.
Shares of US rare earth metal mining companies are experiencing a real boom.Critical Metals are up 241% in the last three months.
NioCorp Developments, Energy Fuels and Idaho Strategic Resources – more than 100% each.
Since the beginning of the year, Energy Fuels shares have increased in price by 4 times, and NioCorp shares have increased by almost 5 times.
There was a gold boom in the 19th century, an oil boom in the 20th, and a technology boom in the 21st. And now we're on the cusp of a rare earth metals boom.
Geopolitics of Rare Elements
China , which controls up to 80% of global rare earth metal production, uses them as a geopolitical lever. In early October, Beijing announced plans to introduce export controls on these resources.However, after a meeting between Donald Trump and Xi Jinping, China delayed the restrictions for one year , signaling a temporary trade truce.
On the news, shares of US mining companies jumped, and China's rare earth industry index (CSI) rose by 2%.
Economic and investment excitement
Analysts estimate the rare earth metals market to be worth $20–25 trillion over the next two decades.These elements are essential for:
production of electric vehicles and batteries;
military electronics and satellite systems;
wind turbines and solar panels;
chips and high-tech sensors for AI.
However, experts warn that, as in previous feverish eras, not all players will survive.
During any boom, there's overinvestment. Many companies won't be able to find their gold in the rare earth metals world.
GEO-factor: USA, China and new production centers
The largest reserves of rare earth elements are concentrated in China, the United States, Australia, and Greenland. According to the company, the Critical Metals project in Southern Greenland could become one of the largest in the world.Washington is seeking to diversify supplies and is entering into agreements with Canada, Australia and African countries to reduce its dependence on Beijing.
Prospects and risks
According to BloombergNEF analysts , demand for rare earth elements will grow by 15-20% annually over the next decade. But without sustainable supply and processing, the US risks falling behind China in the race for "new oil."Experts warn:
overheating of the sector and an investment bubble are possible ;
dependence on government regulation in China;
the need for innovation for environmentally friendly mining.
Conclusion
Rare earth metals are the new strategic currency of the 21st century , connecting technological progress, energy and geopolitics.
The race for these resources will determine not only the economic winners, but also a new balance of power between the United States, China, and other players on the global stage.
