Mark Zuckerberg Hires Scale AI Co-Founder to Boost Meta’s AI Ambitions
According to current and former Meta employees, Mark Zuckerberg was frustrated by competitors like OpenAI outpacing Meta in both foundational AI models and consumer-facing applications.
Mark Zuckerberg Hires Scale AI Co-Founder to Boost Meta’s AI Ambitions
While Meta did not acquire Scale AI outright, it adopted a strategy similar to that of Google and Microsoft, which have partnered with AI leaders through significant investments rather than full acquisitions.
Scale AI has been expanding aggressively, including a multimillion-dollar deal with the U.S. Department of Defense announced in March.
In November, it collaborated with Meta on Defense Llama, a specialized version of Meta’s open-source Llama model designed to support American national security missions.
Meta’s AI Challenges
By 2025, AI has become one of Meta’s top priorities. However, the company has struggled to keep up with rivals like OpenAI and China’s DeepSeek, whose models are preferred by the broader developer community. The release of Llama 4, which included only two smaller versions, disappointed developers, further frustrating Zuckerberg. Plans for a larger, more powerful model named “Behemoth” have been delayed due to concerns about its competitiveness compared to cutting-edge models from OpenAI and others.
Zuckerberg reportedly admires Wang for his deep understanding of AI’s technical intricacies and his ability to build successful businesses.
Dropping out of MIT, Wang founded Scale AI and has since established himself as a leader in the AI space. His hiring marks an unusual move for Zuckerberg, who traditionally promotes internal loyalists to key roles.
