BEA’s advance estimate accelerated from 2.2%. Distinguishing annualised growth from the quarterly change makes international comparisons more useful.

What the primary record establishes

BEA reported on 29 October 2026 that real US GDP grew at a 3.4% annualised rate in the third quarter, following 2.2% in the second. The technical notes put the quarterly change at 0.8%. BEA — Q3 2026 GDP advance estimate, 29 October 2026 ↗

Real final sales to private domestic purchasers increased 4.9% annualised, after 4.6%. This measure combines consumer spending and gross private fixed investment. BEA — Q3 2026 GDP advance estimate, 29 October 2026 ↗

What the distinction changes

WFN calculation: converting the rounded headline gives (1.034)^(1/4) − 1, or approximately 0.84%. Rounding explains its consistency with the published quarterly figure; it does not create another independent estimate.

When comparing countries, align the period and annualisation convention first. A quarter-on-quarter percentage cannot be ranked directly against an annualised one simply because both are labelled GDP growth.

What to check before drawing a conclusion

The release is an advance estimate, with the next estimate scheduled for 25 November. Save this publication vintage for later comparisons, rather than silently replacing the number used in an earlier analysis.

For FX research, inspect the composition alongside the headline and define any expectation benchmark explicitly. Faster GDP alone does not determine the dollar’s direction, and nominal growth should remain separate from inflation-adjusted output.
