CME’s original announcement described contracts valued up to $20. That historical ceiling needs to be distinguished from purchase cost and net profit.

What the source establishes

CME Group’s 2022 announcement scheduled event contracts for a 19 September launch and described each contract as valued up to $20. It linked the offering to outcomes in major benchmark futures markets. This article refers to that dated launch announcement, rather than asserting that every present CME event product uses the same terms. CME Group — original event-contract launch announcement, 2022 ↗

A maximum settlement amount describes a potential receipt. It does not establish the contract’s purchase price, transaction fees, probability of winning or net profit. Those are different inputs to the cash-flow calculation.

What the distinction changes

For example, with purely illustrative numbers, a 20-unit settlement receipt on a contract bought for 12 units gives 8 units before costs, while a zero settlement loses the 12-unit purchase cost. Calling the maximum receipt a 20-unit profit would confuse gross and net cash flows.

The historical announcement is useful precisely because it shows how a simple product headline can hide multiple quantities. It is not evidence that the terms of another venue, jurisdiction or later contract are identical. A familiar binary payoff shape does not establish regulatory permission to offer it.

Questions for the next review

Use the current official rulebook and exact contract specification for any present-day product. Keep the historical launch date visible when discussing the original design. Distinguish settlement value, purchase cost, fees and geographic availability before comparing event products.
