The latest CFTC legacy futures-only report available on 27 September records 220,708 non-commercial long and 273,042 short euro futures contracts as of Tuesday, 22 September. The resulting net position is 52,334 contracts short. That is a defined slice of exchange-traded futures positioning, not a real-time poll of all euro investors. Reported non-commercial shorts exceeded longs
The CFTC’s CME euro futures-only table for 22 September reports open interest of 821,689 contracts. Non-commercial traders held 220,708 long and 273,042 short contracts. Subtracting longs from shorts gives a net short position of 52,334 contracts. Each contract is for €125,000. CFTC: Commitments of Traders, CME futures-only report dated 22 September 2026
The report is dated to positions on Tuesday and is released later in the week. It is therefore a backward-looking weekly snapshot rather than a live positioning feed. The report also distinguishes commercial, non-commercial and non-reportable categories; those labels follow CFTC reporting definitions and should not be treated as a complete description of every participant’s motives. This is futures-only data from the Chicago Mercantile Exchange for one listed euro contract. It does not include every OTC forward, spot FX transaction, option or currency exposure held through other instruments. A net position summarizes the difference between reported long and short contracts; it does not say when a position was opened or whether it is part of a hedge. A crowded view can matter, but the table does not predict reversal
Position data can show whether one reported trader group is more long or short than the other. If a currency move runs against a heavily held position, some participants may eventually adjust exposure. That is a possible market mechanism, not evidence that a squeeze or reversal must occur.
A net short reading can also reflect hedging, spreads or futures positions paired with other exposures. The CFTC report lists spreading separately in its tables, and the legacy categories do not reveal every trader’s total book across markets. Treating the net number as a pure directional bet can therefore overstate what is known. CFTC: Commitments of Traders, CME futures-only report dated 22 September 2026
For EUR/USD, combine the COT snapshot with the ECB and Federal Reserve outlook, rate differentials, spot-market liquidity and current data. The weekly report can add context to an existing thesis, but it cannot tell a reader what price will do next or where a position is profitable.
Compare the same contract, categories and observation dates
To assess change, compare the 22 September row with the prior week’s row for the same contract and report type. Note changes in gross longs, gross shorts, spreading and open interest alongside the net figure. A net position can stay similar even when both sides of the market change materially.
An alternative explanation for a currency rally or decline is a change in yields, policy expectations or hedging flows that is not visible in this one futures report. Compare spot moves with other currency contracts and macro releases; do not assume that reported futures positioning caused the exchange-rate move.
The CFTC says its different COT reports categorize trader positions in distinct ways. Keep the report type, contract, date and market scope attached to any quoted number. The correct conclusion from this release is limited: the specified group was net short euro futures at the Tuesday cutoff. CFTC: Commitments of Traders reports and explanatory notes
