Expansion in India is not only a fight for the audience, but also a strategic move in the global rivalry with other AI players.

Expansion in India is not only a fight for the audience, but also a strategic move in the global rivalry with other AI players.
India as a Key Market for OpenAI
Today, India has overtaken the U.S. in ChatGPT downloads, with 111 million to 80 million. The gap highlights the scale and potential of the local market, with user growth fueled by a combination of curiosity, high digital literacy, and relatively low barriers to entry.In February this year, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman visited India in person. His meeting with IT Minister Ashwini Vaishnav cemented the company’s commitment to deeper collaboration. “The adoption of AI in India is mind-blowing. We love seeing the surge in creativity — India is ahead of the rest of the world,” Altman said.

Explosion of interest in ChatGPT
The download jumps speak for themselves: in August alone, the app was downloaded 10.2 million times, up from 2.5 million a year earlier. This growth rate left competitors behind: Google's Gemini, Anthropic's Claude, and even Perplexity, which has amassed 6.4 million downloads.ChatGPT Go Local Rates and Strategy
Despite the impressive numbers, the Indian market remains price-sensitive. Users spent just $21.3 million on ChatGPT, compared to $784 million in the US. The response was the introduction of a low-cost plan, ChatGPT Go, for just 399 rupees ($4.53) per month.The move strengthens OpenAI's position among a mass audience, creating a loyal user base that will be difficult for local competitors to capture.
Infrastructure and educational programs
According to Bloomberg, OpenAI is considering setting up a data center in India with a capacity of at least 1 GW as part of the Stargate infrastructure. In parallel, the company is opening an office and looking for sales managers.Another important step was the announcement of an educational initiative: more than 500,000 ChatGPT licenses will be provided to teachers and students, which will strengthen OpenAI's presence in the education system and ensure a long-term impact.
Challenges: competitors and risks
Despite its leadership, OpenAI faces a number of challenges.These include:
competition with Indian startups (Sarvam AI, Krutrim);
confrontation with global giants (Google, Meta);
geopolitical tensions between the US and India;
litigation, such as the Asian News International v. OpenAI case, which involves copyright.
These factors create a difficult field of maneuver for the company.
Forecast for 1-2 years
Over the next two years, OpenAI can be expected to significantly increase its local presence, from launching data centers to educational initiatives. The key goal will be not only to grow its user base but also to gain a foothold in the Indian tech ecosystem.If the company successfully adapts its strategy to the specifics of the market, India could become not just the largest consumer of ChatGPT, but a driver of OpenAI's global expansion.
